- Story Text:Teachers unions in France are calling for a strike to protest against the government's new COVID-19 measures in schools.
The government said on Monday that schoolchildren will be allowed to do self-tests instead of a PCR test if one of their classmates is infected with the coronavirus as soaring new infections have made the health protocol in schools too heavy.
The government announced the policy after a surge in cases due to the Omicron variant led to chaos and paralysis in French schools over the last week.
But the new policy has created a lack of trust in the government, SE-UNSA teachers's union National Secretary Elisabeth Allain-Moreno said, adding the strike would be the "largest mobilisation" in a long time.
Government spokesman Gabriel Attal said the measures were introduced to allow schools to remain open.
France is experiencing a surge in coronavirus cases with a runaway Omicron infection rate boosting hospitalisations on Monday by biggest increase since April 2021.
