Police in India's eastern Gaya town on Friday (January 14) seized as many as 61 endangered turtles from a railway station.
Acting on a tip-off, raids were conduced on Rishikesh-Howrah Yog Nagri Express of East Central Railway and four bags were recovered and on searching, 61 live turtles were found.
Later, all the recovered turtles were handed over to the forest department.
The turtles picked from rivers in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand states are sent to coastal West Bengal state from where these creatures are smuggled or consumed locally.
Besides slaughtering for meat, the species, protected under India's Wildlife Act are also used in the formulation of certain traditional medicines. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
