In a rare incident, a cow in India's northeastern Gomati district gave birth to a two-headed calf, officials said on Tuesday (January 18).
The two-headed calf that was born last Saturday (January 15) at a farmer's house has caught the attention of the locals of Samatal Para village who are coming to get a glimpse of the animal.
The female calf is born with a medical condition called 'Polycephaly' (having more than one head) and has two heads, two ears, and four eyes.
"It is rarest of the rare case. In such cases, the survival rate is very low, it is around 38 percent, it becomes very difficult to save the calf," said an animal department official.
The state has launched the 'Mukhyamantri Unnoto Godhan Prakalpa' scheme under which, sex-sorted semen (sex-sorted insemination of cattle) is used to impregnate the cows which further give birth to female calves.
The scheme has been launched to boost milk production in the state. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
