- Story Text: With tears in their eyes and chants demanding justice, the friends and family of murdered Mexican journalist Herber Lopez attended his funeral mass and burial on Saturday (February 12) in the port city of Salina Cruz.
Lopez, an independent journalist who ran NoticiasWeb, was shot and killed, police officials told Mexican news outlet Milenio. Lopez was attacked on Thursday (February 10) at his recording studio, outlet RCP Noticias said on social media.
"We are sick of this. We don't want any more speeches, no more. Please, politicians, congress members, do something!" Lopez's colleague Rodolfo Canseco said during his burial.
On Saturday the U.S. embassy in Mexico expressed concern over continued violence against journalists in Mexico and added that a thorough investigation to catch those responsible was "essential."
The attorney general for Oaxaca said two people were arrested in relation with the crime, though the investigation was still ongoing.
Lopez, who worked in Salina Cruz, had received death threats in 2019, according to some local media reports.
At least five journalists or media workers have been killed this year in Mexico, one of the world's most dangerous countries for the profession, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
