- Story Text: Two comedy franchises led by cross-dressing matriarchs collide in the new Netflix film "A Madea Homecoming".
Madea is the feisty, wise-cracking old woman, who has been portrayed on film by Tyler Perry since 2005, while Agnes Brown of hit Irish sitcom 'Mrs. Brown's Boys' has been portrayed by Brendan O'Carroll since 2011.
At the premiere for the film in downtown Los Angeles, Perry told Reuters "We got together, our birthdays are a few days apart. I didn't know if he was in one part of the world doing Mrs. Brown, I was doing Madea at the same time and here we are, so I think it's a match made in heaven or in hell, depending on who you ask."
Both comedies continuously receive relatively poor reviews from critics while being loved by audiences.
When the two comedians worked together on set, there were fireworks.
O'Carroll said, "Tyler likes to riff and I like to riff and there were times when we were doing a scene and we'd be riffing, riffing, riffing, riffing, riffing, riffing, and eventually one of us would have to say, 'Oh look, cut, we have to cut' because we could keep going on forever and ever."
Perry not only wrote the film but also produced and directed it, all while dressed as the titular character of Madea.
Brandon Black, who plays the great-grandson of Madea's, said, "It was double the trouble, and I mean, there was underwear and there were boobs everywhere. It was a very, very funny experience to be in, because I'm like, 'This is literally Madea of the UK'. What am I doing right now? What is this? And it was so cool because it's like my crazy family, Davi's crazy family crashing together in one house, and what's going to happen, you know?"
The film sees Black's character, Tim, returning from college with friend Davi (Isha Blaaker) in tow. What was supposed to be a celebration becomes mired by hidden secrets and family drama.
The film will be streamed on Netflix globally on February 25.
Perry said, "I've always wanted to have a global release of my movies worldwide, so Netflix was the perfect place to do that, so I was very excited that we got this opportunity and his audience and my audience both get to see it at the same time."
O'Carroll's sitcom is shown in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Brazil, and Mexico, but this is the first time the character has gone global.
"You just go wow, this is genuinely and really worldwide," said O'Carroll.
