- Story Text: The killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on February 26, 2012 by a neighborhood watch captain who reported that Martin was 'suspicious' as he walked through a gated community unarmed, forced a national reckoning about racial injustice in the United States. When the shooter, George Zimmerman, was acquitted of all charges, demonstrators took to the streets across the United States to vent their anger and the Black Lives Matter movement sparked.
Ten years later, as Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton and Reverend Al Sharpton prepare to lead the somber anniversary on Saturday (February 26) in New York City, Black Lives Matter is a global movement, a mantra, a hashtag, used across the world to highlight racial injustice, discrimination and police brutality.
Black Lives Matter protests have since swept America and beyond, significantly after the murder of George Floyd. Video of former police officer Derek Chauvin, who is white, kneeling on the neck of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man in handcuffs, for more than nine minutes caused outrage around the world and the largest protest movement seen in the United States in decades.
Floyd's murder also sparked the toppling of Confederate statues, the United States continues removing segregationist symbols at an unprecedented rate.
