- Story Text: Catholics in Mexico flock to churches on Wednesday (March 2) to celebrate the first day of Lent.
Many of the faithful gather at cathedrals and churches to mark a 40-day period of prayer and fasting.
According to canonical gospels, Jesus spent 40 days fast in the desert before his crucifixion during which he resisted temptation by the devil.
"Ask God to help us in these very difficult situations we are experiencing, one of them being the pandemic," worshipper Rosalva Ortega said. "And now there's the situation of Russia's invasion of the Ukrainian people."
The name Ash Wednesday comes from the practice of marking the sign of the cross with ash on foreheads as a sign of mourning and repentance to God before the Easter period.
Mexico is home to the world's second-largest Catholic community after Brazil but numbers of faithful are falling.
