- Story Text: Bulgaria support sanctions on Russia to halt its invasion of Ukraine may seek an exemption if a ban is placed on imports of oil and gas, the country’s prime minister said on Monday (March 7).
In an interview with Reuters, Prime Minister Kiril Petkov stressed Bulgaria supported “all kinds†of sanctions against Russia but said his country currently had no alternative to Russian oil and gas.
The United States is willing to move ahead with a ban on Russian oil imports into the United States without the participation of allies in Europe, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday.
Germany, the biggest buyer of Russian crude oil, has rejected plans to ban energy imports.
Petkov also called for the cost of helping refugees to be shared across EU member states – something he said would not only benefit Bulgaria but all countries bordering Ukraine.
He said there was no discrimination against any refugees from Ukraine who sought shelter in Bulgaria.
The European Union's poorest member state has said it is helping evacuate people from the 250,000-strong ethnic Bulgarian minority in Ukraine, as well as others.
Petkov told Reuters his government had drawn up a plan to take in around 50,000 people that would cost about 2 million levs ($1.11 million) a day for food and shelter.
Some 2 million refugees have already fled Ukraine to other countries the United Nations refugee agency has said.
