Details INTRO: Britain's Princess Diana has been mobbed by reporters and cameramen as she arrived in Italy to receive a gold medal for work with disadvantaged people. Britain's Princess Diana arrived in Rimini on Saturday (October 12) to attend a conference on health andreceive a gold medal for work with disadvantaged people. The conference was organised by Centro Pio Manzu, of which former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev is chairman. However, the elusive Russian statesman failed to turn up for a "date with Di" at the Italian resort. Instead of getting to the Adriatic coast to present Diana with a prestigious humanitarian award, Gorbachev sent a letter of apology. In what may be seen as a snub, he preferred to keep an appointment in Washington where he is thought to be promoting his new book on a lecture tour. Diana was mobbed by reporters and cameramen as she arrived at Rimini's Grand Hotel. Despite an army of Italian officials, cameramen were able to follow the Princess to her second-floor suite. Diana, dressed in a short pink jacket and navy-blue skirt, looked slightly flustered as the hotel lift closed in her face when she attempted to go up to her room. She is due to receive her award on Sunday at the opening session of the conference. It is in recognition of her "Queen of Hearts" work in hospitals and with health-care charities.
