- Story Text: After a two-year absence due to COVID-19, the annual New York City St. Patrick's Day parade made its return in person on Thursday (March 17).
Rain and grey skies did not keep revelers away.
Manhattan's Fifth Avenue turned green as crowds decked out in emerald turned out to cheer marchers on.
"It's the best thing for New York," said New York City resident Patrick Delaney. "It's just what we need, a shot in the arm to take off the focus, lift our spirits.â€
The parade kicked off at 44th street on Fifth Avenue and wound its way up to 79th street.
Marching bands, performers, and politicians all walked to celebrate Irish heritage, along with members of the New York City Fire Department and Police Department.
“It’s a great day," said New York Attorney General Letitia James. "I am great to be an honorary Irish person."
Marchers stopped in their tracks at 12 noon and turned south towards Ground Zero for a moment of silence to mark the 20th anniversary of September 11.
The parade drew visitors from overseas and from across the US.
“I haven’t been to New York since I’ve been about 5 years old. I’m from Detroit," said Vicky Bugin. "First parade we’ve ever seen. It feels great.â€
“We came from Ireland to celebrate, to see the parade here, we’ve seen so much about it," said Laura Taeny. "We haven’t been able to go to a parade in two years, so we’re so excited to be here.â€
Others came from closer to home.
“After two years not having this, it’s great to be back," said Justine Pacheco from Nassau County, New York.
