- Story Text: Devotees in India's northern Amritsar city offered liquor, as a part of a traditional ritual at the shrine of a Muslim saint, Baba Rode Shah on Thursday (March 24) during a two-day annual fair.
As part of the ritual, hundreds of devotees, including brought bottles, pouches, and buckets containing a heady cocktail of drinks, ranging from cheap country-made liquor to foreign brands, to offer the saint and fulfil their wishes.
The alcohol is later distributed among the devotees as a 'prasad' or religious offering.
According to legends, Rode Shah was a seer who undertook penance for a long period. He is said to have possessed mystical powers and could cure ailments.
It is said that in 1896 a devotee offered liquor to the saint in gratitude for fulfilling his wish, which was later distributed among his disciples and it became a tradition ever since. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
