- Story Text: Members of Scientist Rebellion, the scientific arm of Extinction Rebellion, threw red liquid on the Spanish parliament on Wednesday (April 6) in a bid to call attention to their demand for government action on climate change.
The action was part of a global campaign in 25 countries organized by the science arm of Extinction Rebellion.
The activists, some of them wearing white smocks, ran towards the building's main entrance chanting slogans demanding climate justice.
Around 30 managed to get to parliament’s main entrance as they splashed red liquid over the steps and columns of the building as a representation of the hemorrhaging they believe humans are inflicting on the earth.
Activists said politicians are not doing enough to stop climate change.
“The attitude of our governments is criminal, they are sentencing us to a catastrophic future that is why we have come here, where the political power lies in our country to demand them to take action and listen to science,†environmentalist Victor de Santos, 30, said minutes before being removed from the parliament steps by police.
Protesters sat peacefully on the steps as police dragged them one by one off the premises.
Member of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) Fernando Valladares joined the protest and said scientists have repeatedly warned governments about the dangers of inaction on climate change.
"We, the scientists, are very worried and don't know in what language we have to express ourselves in. This is the reason for this rebellion carried out by scientists in 25 countries all over the world. Climate science is not being heard or at least it's not being converted into actions," he said.
Protesters also believe the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) could have gone further in presenting drastic solutions to climate change in their latest report.
