Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24th, calling its action a special military operation to demilitarize Ukraine and eradicate what it calls dangerous nationalists backed by an expansionist NATO military alliance. The West and Kyiv accuse President Vladimir Putin of unprovoked aggression.
Wednesday (April 20) marks two months since the start of the war, where about four million Ukrainians have fled their homes, cities have been shattered and thousands have died.
On Saturday (April 16), President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said about 2,500-3,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed so far, and up to 20,000 Russian troops.
Moscow has given no updates on its casualties since March 25, when it said 1,351 had died. Western estimates of Russian losses are many times higher.
Ukraine says civilian deaths are impossible to count, estimating at least 20,000 killed in Mariupol alone.
There have been on-off negotiations between Ukraine and Russia since the start of the war.
After failing to overcome Ukrainian resistance in the north, the Russian military has refocused its ground offensive on Donbas while maintaining long-distance strikes elsewhere including the capital, Kyiv.
Ukrainian soldiers resisted a Russian ultimatum to lay down arms on Sunday (April 17) in the pulverized port of Mariupol, which Moscow said its forces had almost completely seized in what would be its biggest prize of the nearly two-month war.
