- Story Text:With a feeling of nostalgia for the characters she grew up watching, Egyptian Yosra Abdelrahman has created a small decorated corner where fans can take pictures and reminisce on Egypt’s golden days of television.
Located in a restaurant complex in Cairo, the interior designer has used props to recreate an old television set complete with knobs and windows that open to reveal wooden cutouts of characters.
Crafted life-size figures of famous Egyptian performers such as actress Sherihan, late comedians Samir Ghanem and Fouad al-Mohandes attracted visitors who took pictures with them.
Egyptian television series are popular during Ramadan, and there was a time when most productions used to focus on music, riddles, and laughter.
Years ago, when Abdelrahman lived abroad and felt homesick, videotapes of famous Ramadan plays and television series, which her father sent her from Cairo, were the only thing that made her feel closer to home, she said.
The interior designer started her art corner in 2015, after moving back to Egypt, crafting characters with fake wigs, bow ties, and dresses.
"All of us grew up watching the same channels, the same series, and the same programs, and I guess this is what binds our generation. There was always happiness, nice memories of families getting together, and a longing for a time we all wish we could go back to," she said.
