Award-winning actor Kirsten Dunst turns 40 on April 30.
Born to a German father and German-American mother in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, United States, Dunst, who holds German citizenship, began her career in television but first achieved fame at age 12 in 1994 opposite Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas and Christian Slater as child-like ghoul Claudia in award-winning "Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles".
Dunst received a string of nominations for the role, including her first Golden Globe nomination for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a motion picture in 1995. She also won best breakthrough performance at the MTV Movie, and TV awards and most promising actress at Chicago Film Critics Association (CFCA) awards the same year.
The actor was in demand after that in the 1990s, going on to star in films including "Little Women" (1994) as a younger Amy March, "Jumanji" (1995), director Sofia Coppola's "The Virgin Suicides" (1999) and pageant dark comedy "Drop Dead Gorgeous" the same year.
The start of the millennium saw Dunst take on the Marvel character of Mary Jane Watson, created by Stan Lee, opposite Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man in director Sam Raimi's Oscar-nominated 2002 film. She went on to play the superhero's love interest turned wife in a further two outings, winning awards for the part, including best female performance and sharing a 'best kiss' with Maguire at the 2003 MTV Movie and TV awards.
Dunst teamed up with Sofia Coppola again in 2006 to play ill-fated French queen Marie Antoinette in the Oscar-winning movie "Marie Antoinette".
One of her most successful roles is Justine in Lars von Trier's sci-fi drama "Melancholia" in 2012, about a challenge to two sisters' already strained relationship when a mysterious new planet threatens to collide with Earth.
Dunst won best actress when the film was shown at the Cannes film festival in 2011.
In 2016 Dunst won a Primetime Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a limited series or a movie for playing Peggy Blumquist in 2014 TV crime series "Fargo" and was also nominated for a Golden Globe for the role the same year.
Perhaps her biggest success to date is in the Oscar-winning "The Power of the Dog", directed by Jane Campion.
Dunst was nominated for the Oscar and the Golden Globe for best supporting actress in 2022, as well as garnered a string of critics awards' nominations and wins.
