Now, I know this is a quite ironic week for us to be opening the headquarters, but in a way it's probably appropriate because no advance is ever permanent. There are always forces at work to turn the clock back, particularly on women, and we know there still is a double standard about what is or is not expected and appropriate for how women make the choices in our own lives." WHITE FLASH SOUNDBITE) (English) HILLARY CLINTON, FORMER FIRST LADY AND FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE, CO-FOUNDER OF THE VITAL VOICES WOMEN'S EMBASSY SAYING: "Part of what we want to do with this building and everything that will go on inside of it is to bring people together across the divides that are polarizing us. And who benefits from that? The people who want to turn the clock back, the people who want to strip away rights instead of expanding and celebrating them, and we're not going back and we are not giving in and we're going to do everything we can to organize and agitate and motivate everyone we can reach so that the forward movement of progress that has been the hallmark of this great country of ours for every step forward. Yes, sometimes there was a step back, but then we kept pushing forward. We didn't give in. We never gave up."

- Story Text: Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned of “forces at work to turn the clock back on women" on Thursday (May 5) at a women’s leadership event in Washington.
Making remarks at the grand opening of the Vital Voices global headquarters, a non-profit organization she co-founded with the late Madeleine Albright, Clinton said the center would be used to bring people together 'across divides that are polarizing us."
Earlier this week, a U.S. Supreme Court draft ruling that showed the justices apparently poised to overturn the 1973 landmark Roe v. Wade decision was leaked. The draft ruling, which was published by Politico on Monday evening, sparked demonstrations and mobilizations on both sides of the issue.
Clinton, while not specifically addressing the leaked court draft, said "we're not going back and we are not giving in and we're going to do everything we can to organize and agitate and motivate everyone we can reach so that the forward movement of progress that has been the hallmark of this great country of ours for every step forward. Yes, sometimes there was a step back, but then we kept pushing forward. We didn't give in. We never gave up."
Vital Voices said in a release it would be a gathering place for local and visiting women’s organizations, "providing a place to convene, innovate, plan, and act, in the pursuit of tackling the world’s greatest challenges."
