- Story Text: Shanghai streets were empty and stores mostly closed on Friday (May 6) although the city’s vice mayor said the number of new COVID-19 infections is on a continuous downward trend.
Vice mayor of Shanghai, Wu Qing cautioned however that there is still a risk of a rebound of the epidemic.
Many of Shanghai's 25 million residents are still under lockdown and chafing against the measures, now in their second month, implemented as part of China's "zero-COVID" approach to tackling COVID.
Shanghai reported 4,024 new local asymptomatic COVID cases on Thursday (May 5), down from 4,390 a day earlier. Confirmed symptomatic cases stood at 245, also down from 261 a day earlier. Deaths fell to 12, from 13 a day earlier.
