- Story Text: Harry Bosch, the homicide detective at the centre of the seven-season Amazon Prime series "Bosch" is back in action in the new show "Bosch: Legacy".
Actor Titus Welliver resumes the title role in the series debuting on Amazon's new free, ad-supported streaming service Freevee, previously known as IMDb TV.
"Bosch: Legacy" is set a year and a half after the "Bosch" season 7 finale and sees Harry Bosch at the start of a new chapter in his life, having left his job at the LAPD and going solo as a private eye.
His daughter Maddie (Madison Lintz) and now family friend, lawyer Honey Chandler (Mimi Rogers), are also exploring new territories - Maddie as a rookie LAPD police officer and Chandler returning to life and work while still recovering from a murder attempt.
Attending a London launch event on Thursday (May 5), Welliver said the new show was less of a spin-off and more a natural continuation to the successful first series which ran from 2015 to 2020.
"I think it's a whole new thing, but the same. I know that seems like an abstract answer, but it still feels like the original show, but there's just a different, there's a different focus, a different energy. And we find the characters all kind of dealing with, you know, different places in their lives. So, while it is the same and everyone, the fan base, are familiar and comfortable and they like the characters, they're in a different place. So it's a really good ride," he told Reuters.
Rogers said playing Honey Chandler and developing the initially a smaller character had been rewarding. Bringing her back to the screen was "a blessing", the actress, 66, said.
"It's interesting in that the seven seasons of 'Bosch' really the audience was bigger and bigger every season. So, we were all pretty heartbroken at the idea when we were told that the seventh season was going to be the last one. So, it was very bittersweet for all of us going into it," she said, adding she "cried tears of joy" when the new show was announced.
"Playing Honey Chandler has been one of the best experiences of my entire career. And the idea that we were going to be able to continue with that and that we were actually going to even go deeper into her character and sort of her new life after the events of season seven, it's just been an incredible blessing," she added.
"Bosch: Legacy" is based on Michael Connelly's best-selling novels "The Wrong Side of Goodbye" and "The Night Fire".
Welliver, who has also starred in "Lost", "Sons of Anarchy" and "Deadwood" said returning to play Harry Bosch kept him on his toes.
"I think my connection to the character is the same relationship that people who've read the books and watched the show, he's a very human character. He's flawed, but he's also very good at what he does and he has a really strong moral compass. And when you sort of divide, you know, his courage with his vulnerability, I think it makes him a really accessible character. So people feel like he's a genuine person," Welliver, who turned 60 in March ,said.
"Certainly, for me, I find him, you know, sort of always interesting. I never know what he's going to do. So it keeps it very fresh and fun."
"Bosch: Legacy", which has already been renewed for a second season, will have something for fans old and new, promised Rogers.
"It's kind of great because it's a season eight and it is a whole new thing. So if you've been watching Bosch all along, it's great. You're seeing three of the characters kind of in slightly different circumstances and heading in new directions. But if you've never watched Bosch, you can watch 'Bosch: Legacy' and you're not going to be lost. You're going to be entering this amazing world. And that's what's kind of great, is it works as a continuation and it works on its own, both," she said.
Season one of the series starts streaming on Amazon Freevee on Friday (May 6) with the release of the first four episodes.
Two new episodes will be added to the service every Friday through to May 27.
