- Story Text: Cyclone Asani, which formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal, weakened on Wednesday (May 11) but a red warning persisted in India's southern Andhra Pradesh state, weather officials said on Wednesday (May 11).
The cyclone had intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on Sunday (May 08) and had moved towards Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring state of Odisha.
"Asani has become a cyclonic storm which is 50 kilometers away from Machilipatnam and the cyclone is moving with a speed of 6 Km/hour and that is why cyclone warning persists over Andhra (Pradesh) and Andhra has been given red warning," said Scientist at India Meteorological Department, Bhubaneswar, Dr. Sanjeev Dwivedi.
Heavy rains lashed southern Visakhapatnam city, affecting normal life. The city had shut down its port due to the cyclone.
High tides prevailed in the sea with rescue officials being deployed in the area for relief operations. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
