- Story Text: An Irpin resident has opened a centre to provide food and some comfort for members of the community.
Taras, who didn’t give his last name, said on Friday (May 13) he wanted to help Irpin residents who had lost their houses in Russian shelling.
He runs a generator to allow people to charge their phones amid debris from damaged houses in the town northwest of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.
“We charge phones and gadgets without which it’s impossible to contact relatives and to tell them about the situation that is going on,†he said.
Locals wait at the house, having something warm to eat and drink, while their phones charge.
“I come here once a day, drink coffee, eat and talk to people,†said 63-year-old Natalia Hryhorska.
“It is a support,†added 60-year-old Tetyana Buyalo.
The Russian military occupied Irpin following Moscow's February 24 invasion but Ukrainian forces seized back control in late March.
