- Story Text: A Louisiana court said on Friday (May 20) U.S. authorities were unable to immediately proceed with plans to lift restrictions that empowered U.S. agents at the Mexico-U.S. border to turn back migrants without a chance to seek asylum.
Meanwhile, migrants at the border cities of Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana in northern Mexico, wait impatiently for May 23 -- when the "Title 42" regulation is to be reportedly repealed -- to arrive.
Title 42 is a pandemic-related deportation policy enacted by former U.S. President Trump in March 2020, which essentially closed down the U.S. asylum system at the Mexican border.
The order allows asylum seekers and other migrants to be rapidly expelled to Mexico to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“There was a lot of expectation because the Biden administration had promised to eliminate Title 42 on May 23 but that was stopped in federal court and it’s most likely Title 42 will not be eliminated this Monday," said the Director of 'Espacio Migrante' organisation, Paulina Olvera in Tijuana, Mexico.
President Biden committed to restoring his Republican predecessor's immigration measures, including Title 42; however, a coalition of two dozen states led by Arizona, Louisiana and Missouri, all with Republican attorneys general, sued to prevent the Biden administration from ending the policy.
