- Story Text: Britain’s Queen Elizabeth appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace in London to watch a military parade marking the start of her Platinum Jubilee events on Thursday (June 2).
The 96-year-old monarch stood alongside her cousin, Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, who was dressed in military uniform, as they watched the "Trooping the Colour" parade.
Also known as the Queen's Birthday Parade, "Trooping the Colour" has more than 1,200 soldiers taking part along with military bands. It has been held for more than 260 years.
The queen has attended every such parade bar one since 1955, with scaled-down ceremonies taking place in the last two years because of coronavirus restrictions.
Due to her mobility issues, for the first time, she will take the salute from soldiers and officers from the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
The four-day national celebrations mark Queen Elizabeth's seven decades on the throne. Britain's longest-reigning and currently the world's oldest monarch, became queen on Feb. 6, 1952, on the death of her father King George VI.
