- Story Text: Iconic British actress Julie Andrews, known for her enchanting roles in 'Mary Poppins' and 'The Sound of Music' was celebrated in Hollywood on Thursday (June 9).
She received the 48th AFI Life Achievement Award, which is given to artists "whose work has stood the test of time".
Speaking on the red carpet before the event, Andrews told Reuters "I'm amazed. I'm just so stunned and happy and with so many friends tonight because they've all come out just to say hello and I had no idea it was going to be this vast or this detailed."
Her friends included several of the children from 'The Sound of Music', as well as actors Jane Seymour and Bo Derek and musicians Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton.
Sian Heder, the director of this year's Oscars best picture award, was also receiving an alumni award during the evening, having studied at the AFI.
She said of Andrews "I think she represents the magic of movies when you're a kid and you first understand what a movie can do. I remember watching 'Sound of Music' and watching 'Mary Poppins' when I was a kid and being so swept away and so believing in that character and wanting to meet her and wanting to know her."
Kym Karath, who played Gretl von Trapp in 'The Sound of Music' when she was 5 years old, said "She's just a hit across the board, as a human being, as a talent, as a star, most importantly as a human being but, I mean, I was lucky enough to know her as a person, I am lucky enough to know her as a person and she's even better as a person than she is a megastar, if you can believe that."
Bo Derek described Andrews as "just a legend. Her talent is extraordinary."
But does Andrews understand how much she's touched people's lives?
"Sometimes and it's wonderful. Not really I don't think," she replied. She added "Children love to talk to me and I love to talk to them and then their moms who saw something a lot earlier also like to chat and I am, I think, just one of the luckiest ladies in the world, because I was the lucky lady who was asked to do those films so it's all part of a whole pattern that I don't quite understand but I'm very grateful for it."
