- Story Text: Britain's Princess Diana left Pakistan for London on Friday (February 23) after a three-day private visit to raise funds for a cancer hospital run by former cricket star Imran Khan.
Imran, who devoted himself to the hospital project after his mother died of cancer 11 years ago, has dismissed media speculation that he wanted to make political capital out of the princess's visit.
Some newspapers criticised Diana for making the trip, saying Imran's political ambitions meant she risked becoming embroiled in political controversy.
Imran, his British wife Jemima and other members of their family, saw off Diana at Lahore airport as she left by a special plane accompanied by Jemima's mother Lady Annabel Goldsmith.
The former cricketer, who led Pakistan to victory in the 1992 World Cup, said this month he would enter politics once he had a viable programme and a team to execute it.
Imran's criticism of Pakistan's political system as corrupt and iniquitous has annoyed the government of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who is reported to resent his popularity.
