Hundreds of abortion rights activists gathered in Washington D.C. on Saturday (July 9) to speak out against the recent Supreme Court decision over Roe versus Wade and to call on lawmakers to take action.
Demonstrators waved signs and chanted as they waited for a line-up of speakers.
The demonstration culminated with a march through the city to the White House.
The demonstration, organized by Women's March, also aimed at putting pressure on U.S. President Joe Biden to take executive action to protect abortion rights.
The event occurred one day after Biden said the Supreme Court decision overturning the right to an abortion was an exercise in "raw political power" and signed an executive order on Friday (July 8) to ease access to services to terminate pregnancies.
The order directs the government's health department to expand access to "medication abortion" - pills prescribed to end pregnancies - and ensure women have access to emergency medical care, family planning services and contraception.
It also mentions protecting doctors, women who travel for abortions and mobile abortion clinics at state borders.
The Supreme Court's ruling restored states' ability to ban abortion.
As a result, women with unwanted pregnancies face the choice of traveling to another state where the procedure remains legal and available, buying abortion pills online, or having a potentially dangerous illegal abortion.
