- Story Text: Russian rockets damaged a school and a health centre for children early on Sunday (July 10), according to local officials.
The shelling left no casualties, but severely damaged the school’s building.
“I think that this is genocide of our nation and our culture,†Vadym Kostenko, whose granddaughter went to the damaged school, told Reuters.
Local resident Natalia Kvashnina thinks Russia targets Ukraine's schools on purpose to prevent Ukrainians from learning their own language and culture.
“They (Russians) don't want us to learn the Ukrainian language or culture, nothing,†Kvashnina said, looking at the school ruins.
In another district, a rocket destroyed a private house and damaged a health centre for children.
“I am speechless. I don’t even want to think about them!†said Tetiana Vlasenko, a children sanatorium worker.
Russian forces have been pounding Kharkiv for weeks now.
Regional authorities said apartment buildings and schools have been targeted, with civilians killed.
Russia renewed its shelling of the city and the surrounding countryside in what Kyiv says is a bid to force Ukraine to pull resources from the main battlefield in Donbas to protect civilians from attack.
Russia denies targeting civilians in what it calls a "special military operation" to demilitarise and "denazify" Ukraine.
