- Story Text: The Golden Globe awards are expected to return to television screens in 2023, after being off air for a year, according to speculation reported by trade website The Hollywood Reporter (THR) on Tuesday (August 9).
Although other media reports say it is not yet a done deal, THR quoted "multiple high-level sources briefed on the plan" to bring the awards back to longtime broadcaster NBC.
Dark Western "The Power of the Dog" and a remake of "West Side Story" won the biggest awards on January 9 at a diminished Golden Globes ceremony held privately without the usual glitzy lineup of Hollywood's top television and movie stars.
Actors, directors and film studios have largely ignored the Globes this year after criticism in 2021 that its organisers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), operated with questionable ethics policies and no Black members. NBC opted not to air this year's ceremony.
The Globes normally draws millions of TV viewers to a celebrity-filled red carpet and champagne-fuelled dinner that makes for a glamorous yet informal contrast to the Academy Awards, the industry's highest film honours.
Critics had objected to the HFPA not having any Black members among its 87 members and raised questions over whether close relationships with Hollywood studios influenced the choice of nominees and winners.
The HFPA responded by adding 21 new members, six of whom are Black, banning gifts and favours, and implementing diversity and sexual harassment training.
The group now has 105 members and plans to expand this year.
In May, "Top Gun: Maverick" actor and producer Tom Cruise returned his three Golden Globe statuettes, including the last one won in 2000 for best supporting actor in "Magnolia".
The Globes normally air on a Sunday in January. However, THR said "the network is zeroing in on an air date of Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023", after the first Sunday is New Years Day, the second (Jan. 8) clashes with NFL's regular season, and the third (Jan. 15) is marked for the Critics Choice awards.
It added further that "representatives of NBC and the HFPA declined to comment".
