Russia's invasion of Ukraine enters its sixth-month on Wednesday (August 24), a conflict that has killed thousands, uprooted millions, and deeply strained relations between Russia and the West.
President Vladimir Putin authorised "a special military operation" against Ukraine on February 24 to eliminate what he called a serious threat, saying his aim was to demilitarise Russia's southern neighbour.
In an early morning address on state television, Putin said he had been left with no choice but to launch the operation, the scope of which was not immediately clear but appeared to go well beyond helping Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Putin's invasion of Ukraine has sparked the biggest conflict in Europe since World War Two.
Besides the death and devastation sown by Russia's invasion, the war and the West's attempt to cripple Russia's economy as punishment has sent the price of grain, cooking oil, fertiliser, and energy soaring, hurting global growth.
The United Nations has warned of the risk of multiple famines this year because of the war in Ukraine.
Russia has denied responsibility for the food crisis, saying Western sanctions have slowed its exports and accusing Ukraine of laying underwater mines at the entrance of its ports. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
