- Story Text: Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos and UNITA rebel leader Jonas Savimbi embraced on Saturday (May 6) after peace talks in Lusaka and vowed to work together to end a 20-year civil war.
They told reporters that the 90-minute meeting, their first in three years, had been conducted in a spirit of cooperation and they would meet again in Angola.
"Dr Savimbi has cooperated with me today in the search for a solution to speed up implementation of the Lusaka protocol and consolidation of peace in Angola," dos Santos said, referring to the accord their representatives signed in Lusaka in November.
Dos Santos said he and the UNITA leader had agreed to hold their next meeting in Angola "to give a greater sense of hope to the people of Angola".
"My government has finalised an invitation to UNITA to join in a future government of national reconciliation," dos Santos said.
Savimbi said he had been moved by the meeting.
"The president of Angola has received me so well and has allayed all my fears and from now on we will have direct contact so that we can avoid any misunderstandings." The tone of their remarks contrasted with doubts cast over the meeting on Friday when dos Santos refused at the last minute to attend, relenting after pressure from the United Nations.
Zambian President Frederick Chiluba joined the two leaders for the start of the talks at his official residence but later left them alone together.
The two men last met in Luanda in 1992.
