- Story Text: Doctor Jonas Savimbi, leader of the rebel Angolan UNITA forces, arrived in Harare on Wednesday (October 11) for talks with Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe. Mugabe is Chairman of the Organisation of African Unity's (OAU) Ad Hoc Committee on Angola.
Making his first visit to Zimbabwe, Savimbi was greeted at Harare airport by Zimbabwean Foreign Minister Doctor Stan Mudenge and a group of Angolans resident in Zimbabwe.
Savimbi was driven to Mugabe's official residence, Zimbabwe House, where he briefed the president on the current peace negotations in war-torn Angola.
Later, Savimbi told a press conference: "In January we are going to have a government of national unity." He was determined to see the current peace process in Angola work and repeated a pledge never to go back to war.
Savimbi said that the quartering of his former rebel soldiers was progressing well but added that the demobilisation of over 120,000 soldiers from both sides posed a huge problem for the peace process.
"We have to see to it that there are means in order to convert them to civilian life," he said.
Savimbi was scheduled to leave Harare on Thursday.
