- Story Text: Singapore, also known as the Lion City, is home to 5.5 million people at the tip of the Malay peninsula.
The city-state, which became independent in 1965 from Malaysia, is fast emerging as one of the world’s hottest destinations for wealth -- and the wealthy, who now have casinos and theme parks for play, seaside mansions, and penthouses to stay.
it is also a multi-racial and multi-religious society, of whose population about 16% are Muslim, with bigger Buddhist and Christian communities. It has a predominantly ethnic Chinese population with sizeable Malay and Indian minorities, according to the 2020 census.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Sunday (August 21) that Singapore will decriminalise sex between men but has no plans to change the legal definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman, making it the latest Asian country to move toward ending discrimination against members of the LGBTQ community, a move largely welcomed by LGBTQ rights groups.
But the groups also urged the government not to heed calls from religious conservatives to enshrine the definition of marriage in the constitution, saying this would signal that LGBTQ+ citizens were not equal.
