- Story Text: Overnight floods and landslides caused by storms caught North Macedonian villagers by surprise on Tuesday (August 23).
In Gjermo, in the northern part of the country, villagers had to clean out roads taken over by mud and rubble, with the help of local authorities and a backhoe loader.
Cars were seen buried under rubble and a villager said some houses were also damaged.
The storm did not cause any casualties, and the roads blocked by the rubble that followed the landslides were cleared and reopened.
Gjermo - an isolated village located in the Sharr Mountains - is one of the numerous local villages that faced floods and following storms in the last few days.
The heavy rains combined with soil erosion caused by the recent heat wave in the Balkans resulted in favourable ground for floods and landslides.
