- Story Text: Giant slides, glittering disco balls, and even falling snow… This is Pop in the City, an experiential installation in midtown Manhattan.
Housed inside a 120-foot-long inflatable structure, the “bouncy house†is divided into a series of different zones that visitors walk, slide and run through.
“This was a custom-built attraction meant for Greeley Square Plaza,†said Pop in the City event day manager Amanda Huggins. “Basically, they wanted to bring something very new, different and unique right here in the city for everyone. “
For $20 a person, visitors can run up and down slippery slides and sink their feet – and hands – into a pit of 250,000 translucent balls. Some people chose to throw the balls at one another. Others tried to swim through them.
There’s even a winter zone, where real wet snow falls from the ceiling onto inflatable snowmen.
"We're used to snow in New York, but it's summer, so we wanted to kind of bring that in there too," Huggins said.
In a separate area, glittering disco balls hung from the ceiling, as a live DJ played music that resounded throughout the installation.
Kids and adults alike jumped up and down, and climbed under, through, and over inflatable tubes dividing one section from the other.
“It was really fun. It was just kind of exhausting,†13-year-old Vienna Baez said, laughing.
“We were slipping and falling,†her 9-year-old brother Lucas Baez added. “We went down the slide so many times, and rolling, it was so fun.â€
Built by XL Event Lab, the month-long pop-up experience will close next week.
