- Story Text: Residents in a Ukraine frontline town were on Saturday (August 27) attempting to salvage what they could from the shattered ruins of their homes after Russian shelling earlier in the week.
Russian forces bombarded Orikhiv in the Zaporizhzhia region on Wednesday (August 24), damaging more than 20 houses and garages, according to local officials.
The town is less than 20 kilometres away from the frontline and its residents are on constant alert for another attack.
With smoke still rising from the embers of fires started by the shelling, one man surveyed the destruction.
Oleksandr Mamushkin said his home was now unsafe to live in due to a wrecked roof and damaged walls.
“There is nothing left of my house,†he said .
Nearby an elderly woman had hired workers to attempt to fix the roof of her home.
“We are punished, but we don’t know what for,†an emotional 78-year-old Liubov told Reuters.
In the town's market, traders hastily packed away their goods, one saying: "The shelling started; we should leave.â€
Another trader who was packing up said people were badly wounded in the recent attack, with some losing limbs.
Ukraine plans to expand the number of districts on the war's frontlines where civilian evacuations will be mandatory, as those areas could be occupied and face central heating problems this winter, Iryna Vereshchuk, Ukraine deputy prime minister, said on Friday.
Vereshchuk said evacuating women with children and elderly people would be a priority from some districts of the eastern Kharkiv region and the southern Zaporizhzhia and Mykolaiv regions.
About 60% of the Zaporizhzhia region is occupied by Russian forces, according to Regional military administration.
Russia denies deliberately targeting civilians in an invasion that it refers to as a "special military operation" and that Ukraine and its Western allies consider a colonial-style power-grab.
