- Story Text: Cabin crew working for IAG's low-cost airline Iberia Express went on strike on Sunday (August 28), the first of a ten-day strike calling for better working conditions.
Spanish Union USO said at Madrid’s airport that crew members’ wages have been frozen since 2015.
“We want a decent salary revision,†said cabin crew worker and union delegate Adriana Escauriaza.
The company said they cancelled eight flights not protected by the Minimum Service Regulations, and offered alternatives in advance to the more of 1,000 affected passengers.
The affected flights were four return flights from Madrid to Gran Canaria, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela and Seville.
Iberia Express added they will run 92.5% of their flights on Sunday, and asked unions to stop the strike and enter into talks with the company.
Unions said they have been negotiating for eight months.
Workers will go on strike until Sep. 6 in yet another labour dispute arising from the industry's turbulent post-COVID recovery.
Surging inflation across Europe has led to millions of workers struggling with a higher cost of living, in turn prompting trade unions to demand higher wage increases often backed by strike calls.
