- Story Text: Streets in cities across Ukrainian were deserted on Wednesday (August 24) when the country marked the 31st anniversary of its independence, while communities and governments abroad held celebrations and shows of support.
Wednesday also marked six months since Russia invaded its western neighbor, triggering Europe’s biggest conflict since World War II.
In Ukraine, streets across frontline cities Kharkiv and Mykolaiv were completely empty aside from police patrol cars, as authorities have imposed curfews amidst concerns of possible further attacks from Russia.
In Athens and Berlin, hundreds bearing Ukrainian flags marched through streets city streets. In Lithuania's capital Vilnius, a large rave in celebration of Ukraine's independence day was held. In Brussels' main square, European Union Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen attended an event in which a large Ukrainian flag was unfurled. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson sent a message of congratulations and support to Ukraine via his official Twitter account. New York and Toronto also held celebrations.
Thousands of people have been killed and millions forced to flee since Russia launched its invasion on February 24, saying it aimed to demilitarise Ukraine and protect Russian speakers on what Russian President Vladimir Putin called historical Russian land.
