- Story Text: British actor Idris Elba’s latest character goes up against a lion as he fights for survival in new action movie ‘’Beast’’, which had it’s London premiere on Wednesday (August 24).
Elba stars as Dr. Nate Samuels a dad who takes his two grieving daughters on what should be the trip of a lifetime, on safari in South Africa. But as the family start to enjoy the break and discuss the recent passing of the girls’ mum, a lion, who escaped a gang of lethal poachers, starts attacking humans.
Famous for his work on television including as Russell ‘’Stringer’’ Bell in ‘’The Wire’’ and for films such as ‘’Thor: Ragnarok'’ and ‘’Beasts of No Nation’’, Elba said he took the role because of the mix of genres the movie offers.
‘’It was just this juxtaposition between a survival movie - a family movie and an out and out thriller and I just loved all of that,’’ he told Reuters.
‘’It’s not a film I’ve done before, it’s not a character I’ve played before so I was just sort of excited to have a go,’’ he said.
He was the perfect lead for director Baltasar Kormakur who said Elba is a ‘’great actor and ..a movie star.’’
‘’To pull off being a vulnerable father in that situation …you need a really good actor, but you also need a movie star…to go up against a lion in any believable way,’’ he said.
While the movie was shot on location in South Africa, all the lions in the film were computer generated, with producer Will Packer explaining they had to be as ‘’there’s no way to shoot a movie like this with real lions in a humane way.’’
‘’On set it meant that Idris had to sometimes act against an actor in a suit, sometimes he acted against a lion puppet with a puppeteer …and sometimes he was acting with nothing,’’ Packer explained.
Elba was happy with the end result saying he thinks the CGI and special effects should win an award.
‘’It’s so well done...the thought pattern that went into it and the time we took to make it...when you see it, it’s so satisfying to watch,’’ he said.
‘‘Beast’’, which also stars Iyana Halley and Leah Jeffries, is out in the UK on August 26.
