- Story Text: Floodwaters forced evacuations in northern India as the swollen river Ganges inundated residences on Monday (August 29).
Homes were partially submerged in floodwaters and people were seen wading through waist-deep waters in the city of Varanasi in India's Uttar Pradesh state.
"Several locals were looking for a place to stay while carrying their belongings, but they could not find one," said Rashmina, a flood victim.
Seasonal monsoon rains from June to September cause deaths and mass displacement across South Asia every year, but they also deliver more than 70% of India's rainfall and are crucial for farmers.
In neighbouring Pakistan, unusually strong monsoon rains have caused devastating floods in large swathes of the country, affecting more than 30 million people and killing more than 1,000.
