- Story Text: The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachellet, will step down from her post on Wednesday (August 31), four years after being appointed by the organization’s General Assembly.
Bachellet surprisingly announced she would not seek a second term as the U.N. rights chief on June 13, after a trip to China the previous month she was criticised for by right groups as well as some Western governments, who said conditions Chinese authorities imposed on the visit would not enable a complete and independent assessment of the rights environment.
During her term, Bachelet was the first U.N. rights boss to make official trips to Malaysia and Bangladesh, where she visited Rohingya refugees in 2019 and 2022, respectively.
The Chilean official also met with Venezuela’s President, Nicolas Maduro, in 2019, after criticizing Venezuelan security forces had quashed peaceful protests with excessive use of force, killings and torture in a speech to the U.N. Human Rights Council.
Previous to the U.N., Bachelet was elected as Chile’s President for two non-consecutive terms, in 2006 and 2014.
During her stay at the Presidential Palace, Bachelet met with international leaders, such as Pope Francis and the ex-President of France, Francois Hollande.
In one of her latest news conferences, Bachelet said she would support Chile’s new constitution, to be voted in a referendum on September 4.
