- Story Text: People residing near the site where two illegally constructed skyscrapers were demolished in Noida, near the capital New Delhi, said on Monday (August 29) that they were facing issues due to the dust surrounding the area.
Indian authorities demolished two illegally constructed103-meter (338-feet) tall towers, razing the tallest structures ever pulled down in the country in less than 10 seconds using a controlled explosion.
Over 3,700 kg (8,100 pounds) of explosives were used around 2:30 p.m. (0900 GMT). Strategically placed explosives were meant to ensure minimal damage to the area.
Officials had said on Sunday (August 28) that the air quality had remained unchanged in the area after the demolition, however, the dust rising from the debris entered the houses of the residents.
"We faced problems due to the dust that entered our house and it is still there. We will get it cleaned today," said a local.
The Supreme Court last year ordered the demolition of the towers in the Noida area after a long legal battle found they violated multiple building regulations and fire safety norms.
Thousands had vacated their apartments near the blast site for about 10 hours, and scores of police and emergency personnel were deployed for the demolition of the towers containing 850 unoccupied apartments. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
