The U.S. has repeatedly generalised the concept of national security, abused state power, and attempted to take advantage of the country’s technological advantages to contain and suppress the development of emerging markets and developing countries. This move violates market economic rules and undermines the international economic and trade order. China is firmly opposed to disrupting the stability of the global supply chain and industrial chain." NEWS CONFERENCE IN PROGRESS (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN WANG WENBIN, SAYING: "The U.S. politicises and weaponises technology as well as economic and trade issues, using them as tools to engage in technological blockade, and decoupling technology. This is in an attempt to monopolise the world's advanced technology, maintain its own technological hegemony, and undermine the global supply chain and industrial chain based on close cooperation - which is doomed to fail." - Story Text:Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Thursday (September 1) that the United States was attempting to impose a "technological blockade" on China after chip designer Nvidia Corp said on Wednesday (August 31) it was told by U.S. officials to stop exporting two top computing chips to China.
Wang also told a regular briefing that the ban showed the United States was trying to maintain its "technological hegemony" and stretching the concept of national security.
The announcement signals a major escalation of the U.S. crackdown on China's technological capabilities as tensions bubble over the fate of Taiwan, where chips for Nvidia and almost every other major chip firm are manufactured.
Without American chips from companies like Nvidia and AMD, Chinese organisations will be unable to cost-effectively carry out the kind of advanced computing used for image and speech recognition, among many other tasks.
