- Story Text: Hundreds of French demonstrators, in solidarity with protesters in Iran, marched across Paris to the iconic Place de la Republique on Sunday (October 9), chanting slogans that have become symbolic of defiance against Iran's clerical government.
Demonstrations in Iran that began on Sept. 17 at the funeral of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman from the Kurdish town of Saqez who died in police custody.
The protests have turned into the biggest challenges to Iran's clerical leaders in years, with protesters calling for the downfall of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
"Woman, life, freedom," protesters in Paris chanted, echoing the hashtag linked to the Iran protests, that have gained support globally.
A group of women wore masks, while other protesters carried placards and waved Kurdish flags.
"We have hope, but at the same time, we know that it's very difficult. It's hard, and it takes time. But this time, the people have nothing to lose. They've put their life in danger," said a writer, Zara.
Protests continued across Iran on Sunday despite a fierce crackdown by the authorities, as a human rights group said at least 185 people, including children, had been killed in the unrest.
Videos shared on social media showed protests continued in dozens of cities across Iran early Sunday with hundreds of high school girls and university students joining in despite the use of tear gas, clubs, and in many cases live ammunition by the security forces, according to rights groups.
One protester, who identified himself only as Abtin, expressed disbelief at the bravery of the protesting women, who at times have removed their headscarves in front of security forces.
"One would think it's on the Champs Elysees, but no it's in Tehran, do you realise? A few weeks ago, it was unthinkable, it was a joke, it was surrealist. Who would want death and imprisonment, or both, who would do this?" he said.
