- Story Text: President Emmanuel Macron announced bigger subsidies for poorer families to buy electric vehicles (EV) and pushed for more local production at the Paris Motor Show on Monday (October 17).
Most EVs are currently more expensive than fossil-fuel equivalents and are unaffordable for many.
At the opening of the Paris motor show, Stellantis CEE Carlos Tavares announced that it will double the share of electric car models it produces in France, adding that some new models of its Peugeot brand will be produced in the carmaker's Mulhouse plant.
Two electric versions of its 308 sedans and the larger 408 will be assembled in Mulhouse, Carlos Tavares said, standing next to Macron and the Peugeot 408. He also announced new locally-made hydrogen models.
"What matters to us is that when we are going to support, encourage our countrymen to change vehicles and move more and more towards vehicles that are hybrids or electric, and in particular to make electric vehicles affordable- is to have French production," Macron said.
French carmaker Renault's new EV, a small SUV with stylistic nods to the iconic 4L of the 1960s, will be produced at the carmaker's Maubeuge plant in northern France and will go on sale in 2025.
A lack of French-made EVs is a particularly sensitive subject at an auto show on home turf where Chinese brands have a strong presence.
