- Story Text: Stars of Netflix’s big fall fantasy fairytale ‘The School for Good and Evil’ walked the red carpet in LA on Tuesday (October 18) at its premiere.
Hollywood icons Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington and Laurence Fishburne joined relative newcomers Sofia Wylie and Sophia Anne Caruso who play the lead roles in director, Paul Feig’s adaptation of Soman Chainani’s iconic book.
The story tells the tale of two misfit best friends who aspire to be a princess and a witch. One night, a powerful force whisks them away to the School for Good and Evil - a place designed to keep the balance of good and bad, where the true stories behind every fairy tale are said to begin. But the force drops them into an unlikely place. Sophie - the aspiring princess played by Caruso - is left in the evil camp, run by glamorous and acid-tongued Lady Lesso (played by Theron), while Agatha is left in the school of good, run by Washington’s Professor Dovey.
“I think that the themes are universal. You know, I think we we act like just young people struggle with issues of good and evil. But we all do,†explains Washington.
“I feel like there's love for everybody. I mean, I think that's the point of the movie is, like, we're all a little bit of everything and there's a lot of characters in here to like either love or not love. So that's good. You can choose,†adds Theron.
The movie is based on the first instalment of Chainani’s series which consists of seven tales. It was more than a decade in development, initially under Universal before Netflix took the project on after it had stalled. For Chainani, seeing it on the big screen is both daunting and incredibly rewarding: “Very strange, because this series also for me was so personal. I never thought it would ever even see the light of day or anybody would even read it. And to have these readers sort of reading my private fantasies and now it's coming to life in such a big way, it does feel a little bit like my insides have been spilled out, you know, and it is it's the luckiest feeling in the world,†he tells Reuters.
The movie was filmed in Belfast, Northern Ireland - a part of the world with stunning natural landscapes and architecture that veteran director, Paul Feig felt lent itself perfectly to the story, which essentially is one of love between two friends and how it triumphs against adversity: “The idea that these two young women go into this situation, they're such good friends. One gets kind of seduced by the dark side, but her friend never.. the other friend never gives up on her. And actually, it's their friendship that saves them. I just think that's beautiful. I really wanted to show that,†says Feig.
For Sophia Anne Caruso who plays Sophie, it’s her second encounter with the book:
“I did a modelling job in 2017 for the books, playing a completely different character.. A one day thing. And then it was summer of 2017 when I first met Soman. So I’m familiar with it, but I totally it slipped my mind until talking to Paul Feig about the movie and I now here I am†she says.
“I had actually wanted to read this book for a very long time. I just never got around to it. So when I heard the premise and I knew that they were going to film a movie, I was, like, ‘Let me be a part of this thing’ and I'm so blessed to actually be here and do this. So it's been a big blessing. And I'm I'm just thankful that I have all these wonderful costars surrounding me tonight,†chips in her opposite number Wylie, who plays Aggie.
The School for Good and Evil is released on Netflix on October 19, 2022.
