- Story Text: Late U.S. entertainer Lena Horne continues to make history as she becomes the first Black woman to have a Broadway theater named in her honor.
The Nederlander Organization renamed its Brooks Atkinson theater as part of their commitment to celebrate Black artists.
Horne's granddaughter, Jenny Lumet was overwhelmed by the honor.
“I didn't quite realize how emotional it was - until I started speaking about it. My grandmother, would’ve pretended not to be as thrilled as she was. But she completely, completely thrilled,†said Lumet.
Horne, who died in 2010 at the age of 92, went to Hollywood in the late 1930s and while she never became a major movie star, she is credited with breaking the ground for Black actresses to get bigger roles in Hollywood.
She had a stage persona that was mysterious, elegant, haughty and sexy and it helped her become an enchanting nightclub performer who made "Stormy Weather" her signature song.
In 1981, she received a special Tony Award for "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music," the Broadway show in which she sang and discussed the ups and downs of her life.
The renaming of the theater was partly made possible by the newly formed group Black Theater United.
Celebrities including Audra McDonald and Vanessa Williams attended the ceremony.
