- Story Text:Bolivians celebrated the Day of the Dead with traditional children-shaped bread and visiting their deceased loved ones’ graves.
Bakers baked “tanta wawasâ€, an Aymaran tongue phrase meaning “bread childrenâ€, which are baked figures that represent the deceased.
On Monday (October 31), a large offering was set up in the Bolivian capital of La Paz with tanta wawas, candles, and food for the dead.
Bolivian Culture Minister Sabina Orellana Cruz said souls descend to the living world. “We will talk, we will chew coca leaves, we will eat with them.â€
Many attended cemeteries on Tuesday (November 1) to visit their loved ones and decorate their graves.
Bolivian Pedro Apaza placed two candles on his wife’s grave. Apaza explained he visited her grave on All Saint’s Day since her demise in 1997.
"Dia de los Muertos", or All Souls' Day, interweaves Spanish influences with indigenous ancestor worship in Latin America, especially in places with strong indigenous populations such as Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador.
