- Story Text: Pennsylvania's Senate candidates wrapped up their campaigns on Monday (November 7) by making their final pitches for votes across the state on the eve of the U.S. midterm elections.
The Democratic nominee for Senate in Pennsylvania, John Fetterman, the state's current lieutenant governor, closed out his campaign with a rally in Pittsburgh, while his Republican opponent, Dr. Mehmet Oz, a former brain surgeon and TV host, rallied in Pennsburg.
Fetterman, who suffered a stroke earlier this year, said, "In this race, I got knocked down. Have you heard that I had a stroke? Yeah, of course... Doctor Oz has never stopped reminding (people) of that. But there is a truth about that... I did get knocked down, but I did get back up."
Since summer, Fetterman, 53, has lost his lead in polls to Oz, a 62-year-old celebrity doctor backed by Republican former President Donald Trump, as concerns about rising inflation have helped sour voters on President Joe Biden's Democrats ahead of the Nov. 8 midterm elections.
Oz vowed to strike down partisanship and "bring balance" to Washington, D.C..
"There are too many extreme positions in Washington, too much out there pulling us away from where the real answers lie. I will bring balance to Washington, but John Fetterman, he'll bring more extreme. And there is no greater example, no greater example of two people that different running for the Senate," he said.
The Fetterman-Oz Senate race is one of three critical contests, along with Georgia and Nevada, that will determine whether Democrats hold onto their razor-thin majority in the Senate and, with it, the power to confirm current President Joe Biden's nominees to posts ranging from his Cabinet to the Supreme Court.
Nonpartisan election forecasters and polls show Republicans are heavy favorites to win control of the House of Representatives, with the Senate a toss-up. Control of even one of those chambers would give Republicans the power to block Biden's legislative agenda and launch potentially damaging investigations.
