- Story Text:Qatar is expecting more than 900 daily flights to both of its international airports, as the tiny Gulf nation hosts the 2022 FIFA World Cup, COO of Hamad International Airport (HIA) Badr Mohammed Al Meer said on Thursday (November 17).
Qatar Airways is also ready to add more flights later during the tournament, its CEO Akbar Al Baker told the press conference.
Meer and Baker were speaking at the opening of the Passenger Overflow Area at HIA, which is planned to provide some World Cup entertainment for passengers prior to their departure from Qatar.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino attended the launching event. Algerian pop singer Cheb Khaled performed a new Qatar Airways song for the tournament, and other dressed-up dancers and performers entertained the attendees.
Organizers expect upwards of 1.2 million visitors to make their way to the country for the tournament which kicks off on Sunday (November 20) with a winner to be crowned on December 18.
Most visitors will pass through Hamad International Airport which became Qatar’s primary airport and home of national airliner Qatar Airways in 2014.
However, the doors of the older Doha International Airport have been reopened to help accommodate the influx of visitors expected for the Cup.
