- Story Text: Taiwanese movie Coo-Coo 043 won best narrative feature film at the 59th Golden Horse Awards on Saturday (November 19) in Taipei. The awards are often touted as ‘Chinese-language Oscars’.
The film also produced the winner of the best new performer award for 24-year-old Hu Jhih-ciang.
“I really didn’t expect this, because it is not an easily digestible movie,†said director of Coo-Coo 043 Chan Ching-lin, adding that the goal while filming the movie was to express his feelings towards Taiwan.
The awards for best lead actors were taken away by Hong Kong’s Anthony Wong and Taiwanese actress Sylvia Chan.
Laha Mebow won best director for her movie “GAGAâ€, a family drama telling the story of a granddaughter returning home to her indigenous Taiwanese community from abroad, causing commotion.
The Golden Horse Awards were held in Taiwan for the 59th time, while Chinese filmmakers remain discouraged by their authorities to participate after the event caused uproar in 2018 in China and amongst Chinese stars when Taiwanese director Fu Yue made comments supporting Taiwan's formal independence.
