- Story Text: Austria's rail workers staged a 24-hour strike on Monday (November 28) which shut down all train traffic throughout the country after last minute pay negotiations fell through.
Wedged between eight countries including Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary and the Czech Republic, Austria is an important hub for European rail travel.
A young woman from Frankfurt in Germany who gave her name as Julia said “we don’t see how we can get to Frankfurt now. We will probably have to stay overnight but the question is: who will cover the costs?â€
A young Austrian named Rasputin said he was trying to get back to Salzburg and that he and his friends were unable to find a bus to take them there.
“I’m not a big fan of this rail strike because everything is closed down, there is no information,†Rasputin said, scratching his head.
A tourist from Munich who had spent a week in Vienna was pragmatic: “we’re trying to see how to spend one more day here and then travel home by train tomorrow.â€
The main rail workers’ union had called for a 400 Euro pay rise for the sector's 50,000 employees.
After the fifth round of negotiations fell through on Sunday, it called the "warning strike" which will last for the whole of Monday and also affect cross-border rail traffic, including night trains.
